Mind Control: Hackers working on project that will let you control Siri with your brain

Anyone else foresee problems with this? Like after having too much to drink, or feeling enraged, or...forgetful? Or, can Siri tell and ignore your commands?

World’s lightest material is 100 times lighter than Styrofoam

Aside from making hats for dandelions, this breakthrough from DARPA tickles my imagination!
“The trick is to fabricate a lattice of interconnected hollow tubes with a wall thickness 1,000 times thinner than a human hair,” said lead author Dr. Tobias Schaedler of HRL.

Elsewhere today I read how developments of another material, graphene, is leading to film computing...that's right, as in a thin sheet of film providing all our digital needs.

Teaching Robots To Move Like Humans

These researchers are teaching "Simon" how to move in various ways, so humans can understand and relate to it better.

When people communicate, the way they move has as much to do with what they're saying as the words that come out of their mouths. But what about when robots communicate with people?

How can robots use non-verbal communication to interact more naturally with humans? Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology found that when robots move in a more human-like fashion, with one movement leading into the next, that people can not only better recognize what the robot is doing, but they can also better mimic it themselves. The research is being presented at the Human-Robot Interaction conference in Lausanne, Switzerland.

"Robot motion is typically characterized by jerky movements, with a lot of stops and starts, unlike human movement which is more fluid and dynamic," said Gielniak. "We want humans to interact with robots just as they might interact with other humans, so that it's intuitive."

Using a series of human movements taken in a motion-capture lab, they programmed the robot, Simon, to perform the movements. They also optimized that motion to allow for more joints to move at the same time and for the movements to flow into each other in an attempt to be more human-like. They asked their human subjects to watch Simon and identify the movements he made.

"When the motion was more human-like, human beings were able to watch the motion and perceive what the robot was doing more easily," said Gielniak.

The Dalai Lama Stepping Down?

The Dalai Lama has announced his plan to retire as political head of the exiled Tibetan movement, saying the time had come for his replacement by a "freely elected" leader.

The Dalai Lama, whose more significant role is as the movement's spiritual leader, said he would seek an amendment allowing him to resign his political office when the exiled Tibetan parliament meets next week.

“My desire to devolve authority has nothing to do with a wish to shirk responsibility,” he said in an address in Dharamshala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile in northern India.

“It is to benefit Tibetans in the long run. It is not because I feel disheartened,” he added.

The announcement comes ahead of another planned tour of Australia in June - the Dalai Lama's seventh to this country.

The Dalai Lama was just 15 when he was appointed “head of state” in 1950 after Chinese troops moved into Tibet. He fled his homeland in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule.

The 75-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner has long talked of stepping down from what is a largely ceremonial role, while maintaining his more important position as the spiritual figurehead of the Tibetan movement.
